Music transcription is the process of listening to a piece of music and figuring out, or “copying” it, either on an instrument or by writing it down. Traditionally, this would have been done with pen and paper (or the back of a napkin!) and a CD player but there are now countless tools and software available that make transcribing much easier.
One of the key things when learning to transcribe is to start small and build up. It’s easy to get overwhelmed by the number of notes in a song and it’s better to focus on learning a single phrase or solo at a time, taking your time to ingrain the sound into your brain and hands. Once you’ve mastered this, you can move onto more complex pieces.

This can be challenging if you’re not familiar with the instrument or genre so it’s helpful to have some basic music theory knowledge to help you. For example, knowing the differences between major and minor scales is useful when working out chords by ear.

Listening for the tempo of a piece is also crucial when attempting to transcribe. It’s often easiest to work out the tempo of a song when listening on headphones, as this removes any ambient noise and allows you to hear what is being played clearly. Using a metronome or beat track is also helpful when trying to learn a song, as this gives you a clear reference point and helps keep your timing in check.

Once you’ve identified the rhythm of a piece it’s then possible to transcribe the melody and chord progression. This can be particularly tricky if the piece is in a different key to your own as you’ll need to know what the chords are so that you can play them yourself. A good way to practice this is to find a song in the same key as you and try to play it along with the original recording.
For the more advanced transcribers, it’s also possible to transcribe a full orchestral arrangement. This can be quite a challenge and requires meticulous listening and the ability to reduce large amounts of information down to something manageable. Gordy Haab, composer for the Bioshock series used this method when composing the Main Title Theme; he reduced it down to just a piano and cello which is a huge accomplishment!
One final tip when learning to transcribe is to use a program that can slow down recordings so that you can hear every detail. This is especially useful when attempting to learn a complex solo as it will allow you to hear each note and ingrain them into your mind and fingers. Many musicians like to use these programs when practicing their own playing as well so that they can hear what they’re doing and improve.
