Atlas Air 747 Santiago-Miami Suffers Problem After Departure

It has emerged that an Atlas Air Boeing 747 Freighter from Santiago to Miami is holding to the west of the Chilean airport following a problem onboard.

5Y8028 is the affected flight, with this being operated by N856GT.

This is a developing story. Updates below.

UPDATE #1 @ 2324 UK time – Not long after departure from Santiago, Atlas Air flight 5Y8028 to Miami deviated from it’s route and proceeded to hold, and is still doing so. The reason for this is unknown currently.

UPDATE #2 @ 2325 UK time – Footage from @juanpghi shows the aircraft dumping fuel whilst it is in it’s holding pattern. Again, the cause for this is still unknown!

UPDATE #3 @ 2326 UK time – As per data from Planespotters, N856GT (The aircraft involved in this), is a 12.1 year old Boeing 747-8 Freighter that started out life with Global Supply Systems back in November 2011.

The aircraft was handed over to Atlas Air back in May 2014, and then onto Polar Air Cargo and DHL between October 2014 and February 2017, before being handed back to the carrier by March of that year.
