At the heart of this initiative lies the deployment of one of the world’s most powerful AI supercomputers, signaling a significant leap forward in research and innovation across diverse fields, including healthcare, life sciences, and environmental sustainability.
The partnership, lead by the Novo Nordisk Foundation and the Export and Investment Fund of Denmark (EIFO), signifies a strategic move to propel Denmark to the forefront of cutting-edge technology use. Through this collaboration, Danish researchers, both from the public and private sectors, will gain access to an NVIDIA AI supercomputer tailored for large-scale AI projects. Additionally, they will benefit from NVIDIA’s software platforms, specialized training, and expert guidance, ushering in a new era of scientific exploration and discovery.
Speaking about the transformative potential of this collaboration, Mads Krogsgaard Thomsen, CEO of the Novo Nordisk Foundation, emphasized the role of AI in accelerating scientific breakthroughs.
He said: “Groundbreaking scientific discoveries are based on data, and AI has now provided us with an unprecedented opportunity to accelerate research within, for example, human and planetary health,” remarked Thomsen. “The collaboration with NVIDIA and the resulting national AI innovation center can help Denmark’s brilliant researchers and innovators rise to the next level.”
Echoing Thomsen’s sentiments, Morten Bødskov, Danish Minister of Industry, Business, and Financial Affairs, underscored the strategic importance of bolstering Denmark’s technological capabilities.
He added: “In the current geopolitical climate, it is important that we strengthen our strategic positions. Our government is committed to enhancing Denmark’s global standing when it comes to cutting-edge technology alongside our unparalleled data resources.”
The AI supercomputer, named Gefion, is set to be delivered, installed, and configured by Eviden, an Atos Group company specializing in advanced computing solutions. Expected to be operational later in 2024, Gefion will serve as the cornerstone of the Danish Centre for AI Innovation, facilitating pilot projects across various sectors by providing unparalleled computational power and AI expertise.
Peder Lundquist, CEO of EIFO, lauded the initiative as a catalyst for future innovation and economic growth.

Global data center provider Digital Realty has been entrusted with hosting Gefion in one of its AI-ready facilities in Denmark. Designed to be sustainable and powered by 100% renewable energy, the facility underscores Denmark’s commitment to environmental responsibility while ensuring the highest standards of data security and sovereignty.
The establishment of Denmark’s national center for AI innovation, coupled with the deployment of Gefion, marks a significant milestone in the country’s journey towards technological excellence.
